Viggo Mortensen Cures the Common Cold

Thanks to a cold due to the change in weather, I've spent the past few days curled up in my electric blanket surviving off of chicken noodle soup, tea, and the Lord of the Rings movies. I firmly believe that it was the soothing presence of Viggo as hero Aragorn that made me feel well enough to venture back out into the world.

Choosing the right movie when you're sick is key. The Lord of the Rings is ideal for me because:

A. It has gorgeous scenery, which makes me feel like I'm out in the world (albeit an imaginary world).
B. It has humorous moments, but nothing too funny (can't waste precious energy laughing).
C. Has to be really long- again, you can't waste energy getting up to change the DVD.
D. I've watched the trilogy so often I have dialogue memorized- so if I fall asleep I won't be confused when I wake up.

While movies can't take the place of Mom in making you feel better, they can help a bit. What movies comfort you when you're sick?

My favorite comfort movie is Babe, about an orphaned pig who wants to be a sheepdog. I'm especially fond of Ferdinand, the philosophical duck who fast-talks the gullible Babe into stealing an alarm clock, with hilariously messy results.

It's been years since I've watched movies while recuperating, but I'll never forget coming down with the chicken pox while watching Billy Crystal's "City Slickers." I was in my mid-20s, never figuring the chicken pox would get to me so late in life. I was laughing at the movie but kept wondering why it was making me feel achy, chilled and fatigued. I'm sure Billy would be relieved to know his movies don't have that effect on people!

When I'm sick, I turn to my prized set of Pride & Prejudice videos. I know the story, I know the dialogue, and I know that I'm getting a happy ending. It is several hours of British goodness!

My favorite comfort movies are old comedies, like "Adam's Rib", "Bringing up Baby" or anything with the Marx Brothers. How can a rousing verse of "Lydia the Encyclopedia" NOT make you happy?

My favorite comfort movie is "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." I remember how captivated I was, seeing Hogwart's and the Great Hall for the first time, when I saw it in the theater. Just like Cheryl I've seen it so many times I know the dialog so well that if I fall asleep, I can easily pick it up anywhere in the story.

I like a good tear-jerker when I'm sick like The English Patient or Sophie's Choice. The way I see it -
I'm cranky anyway.
