The Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Fall!

Fall Color Fest
at
The Morton Arboretum
!

It's hard not to love a season with moderate temperatures, beautiful color changes and of course, pumpkins, goblins, zombies, ghosts and witches, oh my! Each year I look forward to visiting garden centers, the Chicago Botanic Gardens, and the Morton Arboretum. If you haven't been to the Arboretum in the last few years, then you are in for a treat. They have completely updated the Visitor's Center and gift shop and have a new garden and maze for children that is truly a-maze-ing. (It's especially
nice on a chilly, rainy day when very few kids are visiting!)

Every weekend in October through November 1st you can find gorgeous plant displays, pumpkins, taffy apples, free wine-tasting and a parade of scarecrows around Meadow Lake. The scarecrows have been designed and built by local Girl Scout troops and are very festive. Every year the scarecrows get more and more creative. They make a great addition to the colorful setting around Meadow Lake. Here's just two of my favorites from more than three dozen.

So last weekend I went to the Fall color Fest with my sisters for our annual sister fest. We toured the children's garden, the maze garden and walked around the lake. What a treat! As you can see from our smiles we had a great time.

What's your favorite fall activity?

Buying new candles because night falls so much sooner, and watching my house glow and smell nice. And keeping the cats away from open flames, that's fun too.

Linda -- what beautiful pictures! Reminds me that I need to get out and enjoy the crisp autumn air. I love to take a "leaf walk" through the neighborhood with my kids. We take buckets and hunt for leaves of different shapes and colors. Then we take some home to make collages, do crayon rubbings, and use as stamps. We also love to visit a pumpkin farm each fall. Pumpkins, pony rides, corn mazes, apple cider, and kettle corn just cannot be beat.

Fall is a beautiful time of the year. I love watching the squirrels. This is the season when they are ever so busy gathering food for the winter. We put pumpkins on the back porch so that we could carve them into jack-o-lanterns. However, the squirrels got to them first. They carved a big hole (3 inches in diameter) in order to eat the pumpkin seeds. They had a feast. How wonderful to watch them. We put some popcorn out and the noisy blue jays flew in and ate it all up. What a wonderful time!

When the weather turns chilly, I think beef. I dust off my slow cooker, and start dreaming about pot roast, beef stew, beef bourguignon, moo shu beef, beef stroganoff, beef chili with dark red kidney beans and Swedish meatballs. It must be some atavistic impulse to fatten up before the cold, dark winter.

"Favorite Fall activity" is something of a misnomer for me, as this is the time of year when I start thinking about less activity. One great big "ahhhh." I stopped by Big Bend Lake a few weeks ago to take some pictures, and the glow of autumn sunshine, the crisp but not uncomfortable temperature, the rustle of leaves underfoot - all of it seemed to be whispering, "Slow down a little or all of this will fly past you." One activity I do love is getting the fireplace going for the first time this season. This is definitely my favorite time of year, for so many reasons.
